Brick Tile Information

Maintaining Brick Flooring

Brick Paved Driveways & Patios are very popular in the UK but are easily degraded by the weather and can end up in quite a state with weeds growing between the bricks and dirt and algae covering the surface. Annual maintenance with Tile Doctor Patio & Brick Driveway Cleaner and jet washing is recommended to ensure the paving is looked after and to prevent it becoming slippery. Internal Brick floors add an industrial look to any room and although less common today can be a very attractive flooring option.

Renovation of Brick Floors

Brick is usually made from clay which is a porous material that can easily trap dirt if left unprotected. Once dirt becomes trapped in the pores it becomes very difficult to clean leaving the floor looking increasingly grubby. The answer to this problem is to protect the Brick with a sealer which will keep dirt at the surface where it can easily be removed.

Something to be aware of on older floors that don’t have a damp proof membrane is Efflorescence which is where moisture rises through the brick and deposits salts as it evaporates at the surface. This is a natural process and the salts can usually be neutralised by using an acidic cleaning product such as Grout Clean-up. It’s important to allow older floors without a damp proof membrane to breathe by using a fully breathable sealer, this will ensure moisture doesn’t build-up under the floor where it can spread to the walls causing rising damp.

Maintenance and Aftercare Cleaning

Once sealed you don’t want to be using harsh chemicals like a bleaching agent as this will bleach out the colour and damage the sealer even washing up liquid is a degreaser and although very nice to your hands and skin is no good on a sealed surface 6 months of using this product will mane no sealer left on the surface of the tiles, as well as this a steamer will have the same effect on a sealed surface as steamers operate at a min of a 100 degrees celsius in order to generate the steam and this take the sealer in even less time than washing up liquid. use instead a ph neutral cleaner such as TIle Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner for weekly maintenance.
